Eric Carle and his wife, Barbara Carle, established a museum, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, in 2002. Inspired by picture book museums they toured while in Japan, the Carles created a museum in the United States that celebrates picture books from around the world. It is a non-profit organization located in Amherst, Massachusetts.

In 1967, Bill Martin Jr. asked Eric Carle to illustrate Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? After seeing a red lobster Eric Carle produced for an advertisement. That lobster launched Carle into the illustration world.
Eric Carle has a new and expanding line of products based on his books and artwork, which he calls The World of Eric Carle. His merchandise includes puzzles, games, plush toys, and more. The World of Eric Carle line of products have been created by a number of companies around the world.
